He arrives late and, under a series of crazy circumstances, loses his senses after mixing wine with a large dose of tranquilizers. Believing the star to be dead, the opera manager teams up with his hapless assistant, an aspiring singer named Max, to both adapt to the role and replace Merelli. Meanwhile, the tenor's jealous wife, his ambitious female friend, Max's new girlfriend, and the flirtatious head of the opera troupe are on stage vying for the star's attention...
